It seems this question assumes that everyone has the same amount of experience and knowledge about exotic species. I do not believe this to be the case. If an individual is adequately trained in how to care for the animal and has the means and space to do it, I feel that there is no problem allowing them to have an exotic pet. This being said, the general population does not have this training and would probably be better off with a cat or dog.
